Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our school and the nurturing, aspirational community we are proud to lead here in the heart of rural Ayrshire.
Pebbles Academy Muirkirk is a school built on relationships. Our commitment to therapeutic, trauma-informed practice ensures that every young person is welcomed into an environment where they are understood, valued and supported to reconnect with learning. Many of our pupils have experienced disrupted educational journeys, and our priority is to provide a safe, consistent and relational foundation from which they can begin to grow in confidence and rediscover their capabilities.
Our flexible and personalised curriculum reflects the belief that every learner can achieve success when their needs, strengths and interests shape their pathway. Through small-group learning, therapeutic support and the ADAPT Learning Model, we ensure that each young person experiences a blend of academic, vocational, outdoor and wider-achievement opportunities that help them develop the skills they need for learning, life and work. Our Muirkirk Skills Hub further enhances this by offering rich, hands-on vocational experiences that prepare young people for positive destinations and future employment.
We take great pride in the strong sense of community that defines our school. Staff know each young person well and are dedicated to creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere where learners feel safe to take risks, build resilience and celebrate success, whether in the classroom, outdoors or within the wider community.
I invite you to read on and explore how our ethos, therapeutic approach and commitment to personalised support come together to create a school where every young person can thrive, achieve and feel a deep sense of belonging.

Pebbles Academy Muirkirk is a calm, relational and aspirational learning community with a strong reputation for supporting young people who have become disengaged from education. We recognise that many of our learners have experienced disrupted schooling, trauma or barriers to sustained engagement, and we prioritise building safe, trusting relationships as the foundation for re-engagement, progress and success.
Our small class sizes ensure that every young person is known, understood and supported. This creates a nurturing, structured environment where learning feels accessible and achievable and where individual strengths, needs and interests are central to planning. Through our ADAPT Learning Model, we design personalised pathways that combine academic qualifications, therapeutic support, vocational experiences and wider achievement opportunities.
Pebbles Academy Muirkirk offers a rich blend of learning environments that reflect the needs of our community. Our Muirkirk Skills Hub provides hands-on vocational and practical learning, supporting young people interested in trade-based routes, apprenticeships and skills for work. A full-sized sports hall promotes physical activity, wellbeing and engagement, while access to outdoor spaces supports regulation, resilience and experiential learning. Our rural Ayrshire setting further enhances the therapeutic quality of the environment, enabling meaningful outdoor learning, excursions and community-based experiences.
We deliver a broad and ambitious curriculum that includes SQA National Qualifications, Personal Achievement Awards, ASDAN programmes and skills-based learning, ensuring each young person works toward appropriate certification and future pathways. Our approach is highly flexible, with learning delivered both in and beyond the classroom to ensure we meet each young person exactly where they are.
Above all, Pebbles Academy Muirkirk is a place where young people rebuild confidence, rediscover their potential and develop a strong sense of belonging within education. Through consistent support, high expectations and a therapeutic, relationship-centred ethos, we empower each learner to achieve sustained, positive outcomes and take confident steps toward their future.

At Pebbles Academy Muirkirk, our curriculum is designed to be highly personalised, flexible and aspirational. Every young person follows an individual learning pathway shaped around their needs, interests, strengths and long-term ambitions. Learning takes place across a wide range of environments- in school, in the community, outdoors, online and through therapeutic and vocational experiences, allowing each learner to progress at a pace and in a way that feels safe, meaningful and motivating.
Our provision is centred around a Therapeutic Parenting model, where every interaction is rooted in understanding, safety and connection. Staff are extensively trained to recognise the impact of trauma and attachment on a young person’s development, and to respond with consistency, empathy and attuned communication.
We view behaviour as a form of communication. Rather than focusing on managing or containing behaviours, our staff work to understand the underlying needs being expressed. This approach supports effective safeguarding, reduces crisis responses and creates an environment where young people feel safe to regulate, reflect and build positive relationships.
Therapeutic approaches are embedded across learning and care: from day-to-day interactions to curriculum planning and targeted interventions. Depending on individual needs, this may include counselling, CBT-based strategies, creative and sensory therapies, outdoor learning, or relational mentoring. Our in-house Psychology team can provide additional support, guidance and clinical oversight to ensure approaches are appropriate and trauma-informed.
Therapeutic practice is not an add-on at Pebbles, it is the foundation of our entire model. By prioritising relationships and emotional safety, our therapeutic model enables young people to rebuild trust, develop confidence, engage more positively in learning and make meaningful progress academically, socially and emotionally.
Teaching approaches are underpinned by positive relationships and well considered interventions to support young people in their learning. Pebbles’ teaching team knows young people well and understands when they need additional support and encouragement.
