Head of Education and Executive Head Teacher of Muirkirk school

Richard has over 20 years of experience working in education, almost half of this has been within senior management. Throughout this time Richard has advocated for disadvantaged learners and has ensured no learner is left behind, whatever their starting point. Inclusive practice is the cornerstone of Richard’s educational values.

Richard is a curriculum specialist and plans the curriculum to ensure engagement and personalisation meaning all pupils progress from their point of entry. Richard has been responsible for considerable school improvement over his career, the highlight being moving a school for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs graded ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’ with outstanding features within a two-year period.

Richard has written policy at national and local authority level having been drafted to work with Education Scotland on a steering group for the assessment of literacy across the curriculum, and has worked closely with a local authority on the development of Work Based learning policy to ensure positive destinations for all. Richard is trained as a Designated Child Protection Officer and Designated Safeguarding Lead by NSPCC. Richard is trauma-informed and ensures this caring and inclusive ethos permeates our school experience.

Richard has overall responsibility for the education of all our young people as Head of Education, and direct leadership and management responsibility as Executive Head Teacher of our Muirkirk school.
